Play online poker to win - When to Race

In tournament poker racing is a fact of life. There are correct times to race, the hard part is knowing the right time.

Let’s assume you are playing a 10 player sit ‘n’ go tournament, starting stacks are 1000 chips and the blinds are 25/50. First hand you get dealt AK off suit. The first two players to act limp into the pot for 50 chips then the button raises to 200. Sitting in the small blind you have a decision to make. Do you raise the pot and try to win it pre-flop or do you flat call in the assumption that the other players to act will fold to the button – as generally players play tight at the beginning of a poker tournament. You are also thinking that it is quite likely that the button is just trying to steal the pot using position. If you raise you should probably raise all in as there is already 375 chips in the pot. If you call and check the to the raiser he/she will probably push whether they hit the flop or not and you could call if you hit or fold if you miss.

Due to the quick blind structure in this online poker tournament and the lack of chips to start off the game I think it is probably the correct decision to race at this point by pushing all in, you have 2 chances to win the pot. Either everyone folds or you can race and win.

AK off-suit heads up against poker hands played to the river. Poker percentages show the chance of AK off-suit winning or splitting the pot.

AK v QQ 43%
AK v AA 7%
AK v KK 30%
AK v 77 45%
AK v AQ 76%
AK v KQ 75%
AK v 78 (suited) 58%
AK v 78 62%
AK v QJ 64%
AK v A2 76%

TIP : If you hold AK and only see the flop, you will only pair 1 hole card (or better) about 33% of the time.
